Joined McLaren young driver programme in 1998 leading to a Formula 1 drive with McLaren from 2007-2012, the first and so far only black driver to race in the series, set numerous records in his first season finishing runner-up by only 1 point to Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari, won the following season in dramatic fashion making an overtake on Timo Glock for 5th position on the last lap of the last race of the season in Brazil to become the then-youngest World Champion, moved to Mercedes in 2013 to replace retiring Michael Schumacher, regulation changes in 2014 mandating the use of turbo-hybrid engines began Hamilton's streak of domination winning both the 2014 and 2015 Championship titles, lost out to his teammate Nico Rosberg for the 2016 title after a longstanding public rivalry, after Rosberg's retirement Lewis went on to win 4 more championships between 2017-2020 and matched Schumacher's record of 7 World Driver Championships, Hamilton was prevented from exceeding that record when Max Verstappen controversially beat him to the 2021 title after a long and eventful rivalry.
Famous for furthering the global following of the sport and a huge environmental and social activist, Hamilton was listed in the 2020 issue of Time as one of the 100 most influential people globally, was knighted in the 2021 New Year Honours gaining the title of Sir Lewis Hamilton.
