Won the 2017 GP3 Series and then the 2018 F2 Championship driving for ART in both campaigns, signed for Williams in 2019 making his debut at the Australian Grand Prix, stood in for Lewis Hamilton inn the Mercedes after he contracted COVID-19 at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix and was famously 'robbed' of his first race win by a fluke in his pit stop leaving him with the incorrect tyres fitted as well as a consequent slow puncture, achieved his first podium with Williams at the 2021 Belgium Grand Prix after heavy rain prevented completion of the race and in which half-points were awarded, signed for the works Mercedes team in 2022 to replace Valtteri Bottas having been a part of the Mercedes Junior Driver Programme since 2017.
Famously nicknamed "Mr Saturday" during his time at Williams due to his outstanding qualifying performances in a very underperforming car even achieving some Q3 appearances, out-qualified Robert Kubica 21-0 in 2019, out-qualified Nicholas Latifi 16-0 in 2020 and 20-2 in 2021, he missed out on pole position at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix by 3-hundredths of a second to Valtteri Bottas after only a day in the car and much discomfort.
