Began karting at 3 years old, went into car racing at age 17 winning the 1999 Euro Open by Nissan and the 2000 International Formula 3000 Championship, made his F1 debut with Minardi in 2001 before joining Renault as a test driver in 2002, promoted to a race seat with Renault for 2003 and won 2 World Driver's Championships with the team in 2005 and 2006 to become the youngest world champion, youngest pole sitter, youngest race winner and youngest 2-time world champion in the sport's history at the time, joined McLaren for the 2007 season where he finished just one point behind eventual champion Kimi Raikkonen, returned to Renault for 2008-09, Alonso raced for Ferrari from 2010-14 finishing runner up to Sebastian Vettel from 2010-13, a second stint with McLaren came from 2015-18 though with little success, after a 2-year sabbatical Alonso returned to F1 in 2021 with Alpine, scored his first podium in 7 years at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.
Alonso is currently the only Spanish driver to win the World Driver's Championship, holds the record for the longest total distance raced in F1 when he reached 92,643km finishing 5th at the 2022 British Grand Prix, he was the first driver to be inducted into the FIA Hall of Fame twice for both his F1 World Championship and his World Endurance Championship.
