Nickname "Smooth Operator", the son of Carlos Sainz Sr. a double World Rally Champion, raced in F3 for Carlin in 2012, moved to DAMS in 2014 to race in Formula Renault 3.5 where he won the Championship, made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso in 2015 via the Red Bull Junior Program, moved to Renault 4 races before the end of the 2017 season to replace Jolyon Palmer and stayed for the 2018 season, signed for McLaren in 2019 (and ended his Red Bull contract) to accompany rookie driver Lando Norris with whom he built a close friendship, took his maiden podium at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix with 3rd place, moved to Ferrari at the end of 2020, took his maiden pole position and win at the 2022 British Grand Prix.
